Recycling Competition: A Commitment to the Environment in Zain Bahrain

July 25, 2024

In a world where sustainability and social responsibility have become more important than ever, innovative ideas that merge environmental consciousness with social impact are crucial. Submitted to ZAINIAC by Fatema Aryan and led by Qunoot Fadhul, this initiative turns the simple act of recycling into a powerful force for change — a huge shoutout to the Corporate Sustainability, Inclusivity and Culture team for bringing this idea to life.

The concept is straightforward yet impactful: departments within the organization compete against each other to collect the most plastic waste. This friendly competition not only encourages employees to be mindful of their plastic usage and its environmental impact but also promotes teamwork and engagement.

Over two weeks, 308 kgs of plastic were collected in partnership with The Global Community Shapers – Budaiya Hub, who played a key role in facilitating the drive. The proceeds from recycling are being funneled into a cause that truly makes a difference — the purchase of wheelchairs for those in need. By transforming waste into something valuable, this initiative highlights the potential of collective action in addressing both environmental and social challenges. Together, we've maximized our efforts to make this initiative a success.

Zain Bahrain employees have gone above and beyond in this initiative, collecting plastic not only from the office but also from their homes and other locations, ensuring that the plastic collected contributes to a meaningful cause. Their commitment underscores the dedication of our workforce to making a positive impact.

The competition adds a layer of excitement within the workplace, as departments compete for the top spot. However, the real winner in this competition is the community that benefits from the wheelchairs, providing mobility and independence to individuals who may otherwise be unable to afford them.

Fatema has shown that with a bit of creativity, corporate initiatives can have a far-reaching impact. This competition not only fosters a culture of environmental responsibility within the organization but also contributes to the well-being of society at large.

This initiative is a shining example of how businesses can play a role in sustainability while also making a tangible difference in people’s lives. By turning plastic waste into mobility aids, the Vanguard has created a model that others can follow — a model that proves that every small effort counts when it comes to making the world a better place.
